How Much Does a Therapist Cost in Dallas?

While we really believe that therapy/counseling as a priceless investment in yourself, we also understand that cost is important and can be a barrier for people seeking mental health services. The lack of clarity surrounding this can make things confusing which can be frustrating for anyone considering taking this great step towards healing and growth. Therapy services in Dallas and Fort Worth can range anywhere from $75/hour to $300/hour depending on type of professional, years of experience, specializations, and many other factors including where one is seeking services (ie private practice, nonprofit agency, hospital, etc.).

how much does a therapist cost in dallas

As Co-Founder and Senior Therapist at Noyau Wellness Center, I have almost 20 years of experience as a Licensed Professional Counselor and Supervisor. I started out working in non-profit agencies, college campuses, and another prestigious private practice in the area. Therefore, I have had the opportunity to work with people of all economic levels with sliding scales, health insurance, and private pay. Because of these various settings and the variety of clients I have been able to see, I understand the importance of cost and its influence on whether or not people will seek therapy or continue care long enough to see the results they would like.

I know talk therapy services can be a difficult decision to pursue, and I want to help make it less confusing and overwhelming when considering cost. Therapy fees are often not listed on counseling websites which just adds to the fear and anxiety when making a decision about your mental health concerns. We want to provide as much clarity as possible to help you make the best decision for yourself.

Starting therapy can be scary and intimidating, so we're hoping to provide you with as much information as possible about what to expect. You will never regret investing in yourself, and therapy costs should not be an additional stress on whatever challenges you might be facing currently.

FAQs about the cost of therapy and mental health services in Dallas

  • Therapy in Texas can cost anywhere from free at a non-profit agency to 375/hr at a private practice or psychiatric office. Mental health care is offered at a wide range of facilities with different types of clinicians and expertise. When considering your options, you may want to consider utilizing insurance, which can make treatment more cost effective. Many insurance companies offer plans with out-of-network benefits that may cover up to 85% of the full fee of therapy. The benefit of using an out-of-network provider is that your clinician will not have to provide an official diagnosis, which can be a deterrent for many in seeking help. Also, often insurance requires a specific type of therapy to provide and limits the amount of sessions for the client. Individual needs are not commonly considered, thus impeding the healing each client is desiring even when more sessions are needed. Without accepting in network insurance, counselors can develop a treatment plan and protocol based on each client's individuality and unique needs.

  • Psychologists in Dallas cost anywhere from 150-500/session. Psychologists have a PhD where they have done significant clinical research and training throughout their doctoral program. People often see psychologists for psychological testing, evaluation, and mental health diagnosis.

An LPC, or Licensed Professional Counselor, has a master's degree with very specific education, training, and practice in mental health counseling. During an LPCs masters program, graduate students are required to complete 300 hours of supervised practicum (internship) experience in addition to 60 hours of coursework. After graduating, they must complete an additional 3000 hours of supervised practicum experience to become fully licensed therapists.

Psychiatrists are also PhDs that are specifically trained in the medical side of mental illness and psychology. While some offer counseling, most focus on prescribing medication, medication management, and finding practical ways to manage symptoms.

Social workers are another type of mental health specialists that have a masters degree in social work. Their focus tends to be on helping clients use resources in the community to function more optimally and establish a functional life. Social workers often work in nonprofits or community mental health agencies and offer low cost therapy or offer sliding scale fees.

  • Therapy is a real investment in mental health and well being, but remembering this can be challenging sometimes. The cost of therapy can feel pricey, but it is based on several factors. Your therapist (if an LPC) has typically gone through at least 7 years of school, an additional 3000 hours of internship experience with paid supervision each week during that time (typically a 2-3 year period), 24 hours of continuing education every 2 years, and continuous research and specialization training. They work for you outside of your hour writing progress notes, developing treatment plans, consulting with psychiatrists, and consulting with peers. Geographical location of the therapist's office can be an additional factor including all of the things necessary to run a business including office rent, payroll, marketing, advertising, phone/internet, insurance, office materials, etc.

  • Clients typically see their therapist once a week to build momentum and really start to see progress quickly. We notice that if therapy sessions are more infrequent (especially in the beginning), the session is more about playing catch up (ie what's happened over the last couple of weeks). With more frequency, clients can start to dig and use tools and modify or add on based on effectiveness. For this reason, we encourage client to front load their therapy sessions and back off to every other week as they start to see consistent progress and healing. Your therapist will work with you to create a customized treatment plan based on your unique needs and goals.

  • Payment policies vary from practice to practice, but Noyau runs credit cards at the beginning of each day. For example, if you have a session at 4:00 on Monday, we will run your credit card at 9:00 in the morning (unless paying cash). We also require 24 hours notice if you intend to cancel your appointment, or you will be charged for the full session. This allows us time to fill that time slot with someone who may seek treatment that day.

In my experience

Your therapist is working diligently for you in and outside of your individual, couples, family, and group therapy sessions. Their expertise is continually evolving and requires time, emotional investment, and funds to provide clients with the best care possible. Specialization in issues such as eating disorders, domestic violence, personal growth, combining mental and physical health, relationship issues, etc. can be pricey but are essential in being an effective therapist. Providing an office space that is in a confidential environment is essential and also requires additional income. Mental healthcare can feel daunting, but we feel strongly that it is an investment in your life. What better thing to invest in than your health, growth, and happiness?
