Understanding the Grief Journey
Grief is a multifaceted experience that impacts individuals in various ways. It is not limited to the loss of a loved one; non-death losses, such as divorce or difficult life transition, or job loss, can also elicit profound grief. The intense emotions associated with grief can range from sadness and anger to confusion and guilt. People may experience physical pain or symptoms such as fatigue or difficulty concentrating.
Every individual's grief journey is unique, influenced by personal circumstances, relationships, and coping mechanisms. Recognizing this uniqueness is crucial, as there is no "right" way to grieve. Professional support, such as counseling or support groups, can provide invaluable assistance in navigating these complex emotions. Remember, seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Grief is a personal yet shared human experience, and no one should have to endure it alone.
How Can Grief Counseling Help?
Successfully navigating the grieving process is something a person should never have to do on their own. Working with a professional grief counselor is an experience that differs greatly from processing your pain with friends or family. As trained therapists, we offer a safe space to feel all of the complicated emotions that grief brings, without the false silver linings that often come from loved ones not trained in grief counseling. Some of the benefits to working with a professional grief therapist include:
Emotionally process intense feelings such as anger, depression, fear, guilt, and disbelief that make up the grieving process.
Learn coping skills that can help you deal with the emotional pain involved in moving forward and healing. Grief therapists provide tools helping individuals to acquire long lasting resilience.
Decrease isolation by having a professional walk with you on your journey towards greater peace. Human contact is healing when overcoming great loss and trauma.
The therapeutic relationship also helps individuals and grieving families by instilling hope through encouragement that relief is possible and joy still exists.
Loss of any kind is a struggle for us, and feelings of grief at that loss are a normal expression of that. Beyond losing a loved through death, grief is felt when we lose many types of relationships. Perhaps our grief is caused by divorce, losing our job, moving, or transitioning to a new season of our lives; whatever the cause the sense of loss can be profound. Having someone to help when we are struggling and walk with us on our path towards peace acceptance is leads us to a freer heart.

FAQs about Grief Counseling
-
It is truly painful for us to watch as someone we care for struggles through the grieving process. No matter the source of their grief, it is vital that you allow them to feel whatever they are feeling. Making space to simply sit with someone, without judgement or the need to 'fix' their pain, is the most important thing you can do for someone who is grieving. Our natural response may be to want to help them "feel better" causing us to rush them through the process. The best support you can offer is to allow them to be in water phase of grief they are in. Working with a therapist is especially helpful for that reason. Our therapists are trained to help both adults and children as they experience these complex emotions.

While there are many types of mental health professionals it is important to work with someone who has experience in grief counseling and the educational background to go along with that. In Texas Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC) or LPC Associates, are trained in grief counseling and certified by the Texas State Board. When choosing a counselor that is right for you, look for a board certified counselor.
In addition to credentials you'll want a therapist that feels right for you. The therapeutic relationship is powerful and necessary for successful outcomes. If you don't feel your therapist is the best fit for your personality it is important to discuss that and find someone who you feel comfortable with.

Grief comes in many forms and creates a marked moment from which one part of life ends and the next begins. The transition through grief and into peace can be long and difficult.
